Shoulder Press Technique

First up, just to say that overhead pressing is one of the hardest/slowest upper body exercises to see consistent progression with, and it’s the lift that has the most scope for form to fall apart. Usually, the lower back is very arched, range of motion is compromised, and the elbows are jammed out wide, which feels really gnarly.

So here are some tips to help:

1️⃣Use a high incline, NOT a vertical bench.

2️⃣Elevate the feet to rock the entire pelvis posteriorly— plus, you can push against it to keep the hips set.

3️⃣Bring the elbows forward slightly so you’re not on the end range of the joints’ rotational capacity.

4️⃣Make sure you come all the way down—even if that means you can’t get the weight into the full lockout.

5️⃣Try not to lock out fully at the top—maintain a slight bend in the elbow to keep the tension on the target muscle.

I’ve used this line throughout most of my career, but I am also very aware that as a percentage of the population of the planet, people just need to move more.

It’s estimated that only 25% of Americans and 50% of Brits meet or exceed the government recommended weekly daily activity amounts.

So, to a degree, I care more about people just doing anything, let alone worrying about if it’s random or not.

But, I exist in a pocket of the industry where I talk to people who are putting in a lot of hours and effort, and for the time commitment, they don’t feel they are seeing the results their commitment deserves.

And, for that population, this becomes an important topic.
